Tax residency in Ireland
For Irish personal income tax purposes, an individual is resident for a calendar tax year if present in Ireland for 183 days or more in that year, or for 280 days or more in aggregate over that year and the immediately preceding year, with at least 30 days in each of those two years. Ordinary residence is a separate status that begins once an individual has been resident in Ireland for three consecutive tax years (from the start of the fourth year) and continues for three years after the individual ceases to be resident. Domicile is distinct from residence and, together with residence and ordinary residence, can influence the scope of taxation of non-Irish income but does not itself determine residence. Where an individual is resident in Ireland and another jurisdiction, dual residence may be resolved under an applicable tax treaty using tie-breaker criteria such as permanent home, centre of vital interests, habitual abode, and nationality.
