Tax residency in Uruguay
For individuals, Uruguay determines income tax residence on a calendar-year basis, and residence is established if any one of the following conditions is met: (1) physical presence in Uruguayan territory for more than 183 days in the year, counting sporadic absences as days of presence unless the person proves tax residence in another country; (2) having in Uruguay the center or base of activities or of economic/vital interests, with a rebuttable presumption of such vital interests when a spouse (not legally separated) and minor dependent children habitually reside in Uruguay; or (3) being deemed to have economic interests in Uruguay through objective investment thresholds, specifically acquisition of real estate in Uruguay exceeding 3,500,000 Indexed Units (UI) together with more than 60 days’ presence in the year, or investment in a Uruguayan company exceeding 15,000,000 UI that generates at least 15 new direct, permanent (non-seasonal) jobs during that year.
