Tax residency in Singapore
An individual is treated as a Singapore tax resident for a Year of Assessment (YA) if, in the preceding calendar year, the individual resides in Singapore (including Singapore citizens and permanent residents who ordinarily reside there, allowing only reasonable temporary absences), or is physically present in Singapore or exercises employment there (other than as a company director) for at least 183 days in that year. Administrative concessions for foreigners provide that a continuous period of work in Singapore spanning two calendar years and totaling at least 183 days confers resident status for both corresponding YAs; presence in Singapore for three consecutive calendar years confers resident status for all three corresponding YAs even if the first and third years are each fewer than 183 days; and a foreigner issued a work pass valid for at least one year is treated as resident, with final status subject to review at tax clearance under the foregoing rules. These concessions do not apply to company directors, public entertainers, or visiting professionals.
